A Hero is born once in a thousand years

It is shocking that a Kashmiri nation with fertile mind and eloquent tongue and which has upheld the tradition of communal harmony, international brotherhood and mutual tolerance and self identity despite severe vicissitudes of history has been subjected to wretched kind of slavery for more than four centuries. It was merely a pretence and excuse that internal differences were played up and hatred injected among the different sections of people that our Independent country was invaded by Emperor Akbar. Inspite of all the mechanizations the people of Kashmir deserve admiration and accolades for putting up a heroic resistance to the Mughal army. The heroic resistance inflieded heavy loss on the Mughal army and the Mughal Maidan of Kishtwar is famous for the same. Anyhow despite long fight, Alas! We were enslaved physically but our spirit of freedom did not surrender. The yolk of slavery makes our necks ache and our hearts cry for independence and sovereignty. No period of slavery whether Mughal, Afghan, Sikh or Dogra or the present period witnessed reconciliates with the status quo, the struggle adopted various forms of expression to pave the way for the dawn of freedom. The acute feeling and excruciating pain for the loss of sovereignty has remained there with Kashmiri Nation. Wherever the chances arose the people gave vent to the suppressed passion for the freedom. The people of Kashmir feel elated whenever good news regarding the achievement of freedom by a slave nation is received. We extend our moral support to the struggling nations and share their joys and sorrows. We feel our own spirit of freedom is strengthened whenever there is addition of an independent nation in the comity of nations. Whether it was Indonesia’s freedom, Malaysia’s emancipation, the triumph of Vietcong, or the liberation of Libya or Algeria, or the enblock liberation of central Asian Republics or the independence of Baltic States, the people of Kashmir celebrated the liberation and shared their joy enthusiastically. Besides appreciating our own freedom Heroes we also hail the freedom heroes of their nations. There is an historical irony or a political enigma that a particular section of our society boosting to be think tanks has always worked against the interests of kashmiri Nation and played the role of collaborators with the occupation forces inspite of the fact that the grateful nation always protected their rights and willingly accoladed them more than their due. Even presently this section is awfully busy to tarnish the image of freedom struggle and the Kashmiri nation through propaganda, media and web sites. Even during the economic blockade this miniscule section played the role of hosts to the R.S.S, Shiv Sena, Bajrangdal and B.J.P activists. It is worthwhile to mention here that there are certain honorable exceptions like P.N.Bazaz, R.N.Ravishnavi, Sham lal yacha, H.N. Wanchoo and Sampat Prakash etc. who have identified with the nation and contributed a lot in the freedom struggle. The grateful and graceful nation would not afford to ignore their sacrifices. Infact they have engraved their names eternally in the annals of Kashmiri Freedom Struggle. It is noteworthy to mention during the Dogra rule, Sheikh Abdullah, Mirwaiz Yousuf Shah, Chaudhary Abbas, A.R.Sagar, Chaudhary Hamidullah, G.N. Gilkar, Gh. Ahmad Ashai, P.N. Bazaz kept the beacon light of freedom to glow and aloft and offered record sacrifices. It is another story that they fell pray to conspiracies hatched by the ruling class and their collaborators and we were lead astray in 1947. Had there been collective superb vigil on the inimical forces, the conspiracies would not have been succeeded and we would have been in a better position to achieve our lost independence and sovereignty. The race for armament between India and Pakistan has resulted in backwardness and ignorance with large population below poverty line. Hundreds and millions of people would not have been without food, clothing and shelter. There would have been no conflicts, no wars and no new martyr graveyards in every nook and corner of Kashmir. However, these are ifs of history and we need to look forward to avoid pitfalls. The youth of Kashmir have always remained in the forefront of the resistance struggle and sacrificed their precious lives for the honour, dignity and freedom of their nation. However there have been certain young dedicated leaders who left their deep imprints on the sands of time and Muhammad Maqbool Bhat is one such leader who surpassed all others in vision, dedication, concept of sovereignty and independence. He has successfully covered many important milestones on his long journey to goal of freedom. He trod the rugged and rough path of freedom with grace and grandeur and gave right direction and right motives to fellow freedom travelers to cover the remaining distance till the final goal of independence and sovereignty is achieved. With his untiring efforts, selfless devotion, clear vision and clear concept of independence he emerged a really freedom icon for the Kashmiri nation. He was fully convinced about the sovereignty idea to be achieved at the heaviest cost. He deserves all the accolades of Homer for whatever he preached he himself practiced it in letter and spirit. To amass wealth, to build business mansions, to erect palaces for luxurious life style had no place in his agenda. Out of his three brothers two achieved martyrdom. There is no gap between the word and the deed. He initiated sacrifices from his person and family and set a unique example of lofty self sacrifices. He endeavored so much to the nation that he has become a household name in whole of Kashmir. He had all the sound logic, cogent reason and true historical perspective to advocate his sovereignty ideal. Whoever came into his contact he was convinced of his ideological brilliance and conceptual clearance. Even his political opponents were impressed of his sincerity, devotion and dedication. His political and literary statements were often embellished with quotes from Faiz and Iqbal. He never lacked words during discussions to put across his point. He was mostly listened with raft attention. He was extremely comfortable whenever he held press conferences and serenely used to reply the volley of questions pressed by the journalists. Journalists who had attended his press conferences were greatly impressed by him and conveyed the same to editor Srinagar times during editors meet in Baghdad in nineteen eighties. He was a born revolutionary and had an intellectual association with the revolutionaries of the world. He was a man of iron will but with a very kind heart. His heart pulsated with the heart of the nation and deeply felt the pain and agony of his suffering and subjugated nation. He was fully abreast with the long and chequered history of pain and deprivations and the golden periods of our national sovereignty and independence. It was great driving force for him and his comrades to dedicate his life for the restoration of national sovereignty. He proved every word of his commitment with his precious youth and blood and victoriously smiled and gracefully mounted the gallows. He created an enviable permanent nieche among the galaxy of great martyrs of the world, like Socrates, Hazarat Eisa (A.S), Hazarat Imam Hussain (A.S) and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He was confident that his martyrdom would strength his mission and popularize it. Much before embracing the gallows he would sing with Faiz Ahmad Faiz, “Sitouney dar pa rakhtae chalo saraun key charag Jabtalak sihaye shab ki chalay” and surely he must have sang the same song with greater intensity and fuller devotion. He achieved such a great status across the ceasefire line that he was offered power and pelf simply to sing their songs but he sang the song of sovereignty and independence of his nation and rejected all such offers. Hazarat Imam Hussain (A.S) offered memorable sajda (bow) in the battle field of Karbala and eternalized and surpassed all the sacrifices in the way of Allah. Mohammad Maqbool Bhat toed the line of Hazarat Imam Hussain (A.S) and bowed before Allah on the gallows. The jail authorities will bear testimony to the fact that Maqbool Bhat walked from his confinement cell to gallows with exemplary grace and enviable courage. His face and eyes radiated glow. There was no regrets, no sadness but the sense of triumph that the opponent forces have acknowledged the truth of efficacy and the ideology and in desperation are trying to conceal the facts. The angels were happy and jubilant over the success of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat but the nation was deeply mourning his loss. But it is an undeniable fact that his martyrdom had given birth to many junior Maqbools. His martyrdom sowed the seeds of revolution and his blood would continue to irrigate the land till the harvest of freedom is ripe and is ready to be reaped and utilized. He hated conspirators, collaborators and double deckers within Kashmiri nation, but he showed utmost respect for the opposite opinion and thought. He announced that, “An agent is always a double agent. He cannot be true friend of any party”. His allegiance was first and foremost for the people of Kashmir. He never liked to keep his conscience hostage to perks and privileges offered by occupation forces he was well wisher of India and Pakistan but had strong objection to their occupation of his native land. He made all out efforts to see his country liberated and united and to make it a member of U.N.O. He was a noble Muslim but had deep respect for other faiths of his countrymen. He was very good writer and a journalist and worked as an editor of Newspaper for sometime. But the demands of the party and the call of suffering nation did not allow him to continue the job and he had to employ efforts and resources to make the party strong and the ideology of sovereign Kashmir appealing and popular. He was admirer of Muhammad Bin Bella, Farhat Abbas Hochimin, Fidel Castro, Chi Guerra, Yassar Arafat for their revolutionary zeal and sacrifices for their nations. Besides the peaceful struggle under the banner of AJK Plebiscite Front he introduced Armed Struggle under the banner of JKNLF to make the usurpers understand that his suppressed nation is free to employ any genuine means to achieve the freedom. His education to the nation proved useful and powers that be offered unconditional talks to resolve the complex Kashmir problem. The struggle enabled the nation to bring the Kashmir problem out of the cold storage and keep high on the agenda of dialogue. It has been accepted as the flash point between India and Pakistan who are equipped with most fatal atomic weapons. Let the people mobilize all the resources to make the mission of Maqbool Bhat transform into a reality. Let India and Pakistan shun the egos, biases and listen the voice of conscience and allow the people of Kashmir to be one among the comity of nations. We salute Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and all other martyrs for their priceless sacrifices for the cause of sovereignty of their nation. Mohammad Maqbool ganaiemaqbool@yahoo.com Rtd. Kashmir solution and role of our intellectuals

Kashmir solution and role of our intellectuals

Some political analysts and commentators are of firm belief that this is the ideal and fully ripe time for the resolution of Kashmir dispute. After the Mumbai attacks Kashmir dispute has once again hogged the lime light and all the key global powers and players have felt the dire need of solving it as it is the key to the permanent and sustainable peace in south Asia. American president Obama all along his election campaign highlighted the need of resolving this vexed issue, and similarly British Foreign Secretary David Miliband made some rational comments which irritated India and recently U.N Secretary General Ban Ki Moon described it as world’s most dangerous place and Susan Rice described it as one of the hot spots.

India may have got some relief from the Obama administrations move to appoint special envoy Richard Holbrooke with his mandate ‘limited’ to Afghanistan and Pakistan only, which many believe was done on Indian governments request as it would have created major hiccups for them as elections are just few months away in India. But it would be impossible for Holbrooke and Obama administration to overlook the lingering Kashmir dispute in their broader assignments in south Asia which has potential to disturb the whole equation of events and Americans know it well that road to peace in this entire region lies through the Kashmir and the basic cause of contention between India and Pakistan is Kashmir dispute and that is why despite Kashmir being not on Holbrooke’s “Plate” he said “ we have to understand that to get the Pakistanis to focus on the west, we have to have a reduction in tensions between India and Pakistan”.

Back home pro-freedom leadership doesn’t look prepared to gear them selves to meet the changes and challenges which may come into effect after the loksabha elections in India will be over, they need to come out of illusion of defeat and set back after the good voter turn out in 2008 elections. If they analyze recent elections properly they haven’t suffered any defeat as the “mainstream” camp got forced to toe their line and they had to leave the pro-India cloak to seek the votes from people hence the stand of pro-freedom camp stands vindicated. And people didn’t voted for any ideology but only for developmental issues and de-linked Kashmir dispute from elections which forced the “mainstream” leaders to do the same. Pro-freedom leadership represents the sacred sentiment which is deep rooted in the hearts and minds of people of Kashmir, so there is no question of defeat or of any setback to them.

Our intellectuals should come up with innovative ideas and present them before the pro-freedom leadership rather than criticizing them only and they should stop questioning the commitment of people towards the freedom struggle as people are wedded to the cause of complete independence and sovereignty of Kashmir. Yes criticism is necessary but only criticism won’t do anything, our intellectuals should put their heads together and present suggestions before the leadership and guide them to empower them with new ideas constantly so that they can carry on freedom struggle with renewed vigor and impetus. Recently many pro-freedom leaders admitted that due to lack of any strategy they failed to capitalize on the popular agitation witnessed in 2008 and lost an important opportunity. Now it is for intellectuals to come forward and help them in formulating a clear and workable strategy. Mere criticizing them would amount to hypocrisy. It is the responsibility of everyone to see and check whether the struggle for independence is going on in right direction or not, as we all belong to this soil, hence can’t escape the huge responsibility laid on our shoulders by the lakhs of martyrs who gave their red hot blood to highlight this dispute in international arena. In this regard intellectual class of our society has more responsibility and they should take the lead and discharge their moral and national duty accordingly and it would be better if they will do it collectively.

India has always been in denial mode in accepting Kashmir as the core dispute this has impinged the peace, progress and security of entire south Asian region, this dispute has led to the arms race in this region due to which it has become a big drainage to the sources of India and Pakistan and of Kashmir as well hence its resolution is must and in the interest of all. So it is imperative for the pro-freedom leadership that they exert themselves like conscientious protagonists of the cause of independence of Kashmir and it is for our intellectuals to add more subjectivity to it which will prove a deterrent against the trends of war in South Asia and will act as buffer between India and Pakistan.

Mahaz-e-Azadi Condemns Bumai Sopore Killing

Jammu Kashmir Mahaz-e-Azadi (MeA)President Mir Mohammad Iqbal in a statement has strongly condemned the imposition of undeclared curfew in major parts of Srinagar and Sopore –paradoxically section 144 has been invoked to barb Kashmiris resolute for Freedom . Army’s action in Bumai Sopore in which two innocent youth were martyred , is the indicative of the fact that armed forces deputed in Kashmir are meant to exterminate the just cause (freedom) and have been left trigger free.
MeA pays rich tributes to Youth of Bumai who achieved martyrdom, Mir Said, “We urge international HR organizations to depute fact finding missions for Kashmir : to query for the killing of naïve Kashmiris at the hands Indian armed forces ” Meanwhile President Mahaz-e-Azadi has also express disapproval on the mysterious killing of Maisuma youth at Parimpora and insisted for an independent probe in to the incident. In the meantime MeA has expressed profoun grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Advocate Gh. Hassan Malik of Tral and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family of Malik .MeA prayed that -May Allah grant eternal peace to the departed soul.

Some Proposals

For those who are enjoying the position of prominence in the higher echelons of power in Pakistan and India.

For those who are enjoying the position of prominence in the higher echelons of power in Pakistan and India::::::::::: ::::::Compliments! Leaders of undivided India (with special reference to the leaders of Muslim League and Indian National Congress), while accepting the partition of India as a fait accompli allowed the realignment of 565 princely states with the new two dominions – Bharat and Pakistan- with a magnanimous heart. Unfortunately the leaders of Bharat, Pakistan and Kashmir could not arrive at a consensus concept regarding the future dispensation of Kashmir ; with the result that Bharat and Pakistan became the major contenting parties both trying to get the better of each other in the arena of Kashmir politics. Kashmir became a bone of contention between India and Pakistan and hence an ideal battlefield for those who were and are still feeling nostalgic about regression which is anachronistic for the people having futuristic approach to life and politics . Egocentric leaders of India and Pakistan who feel obsessed with the past history of communal polarization would want to foment trouble in various regions of South Asia simply to further the cause of subversive politics. They would like to see India and Pakistan permanently embedded and entrenched in the mesh and marsh of sentiments of belligerency and animosity based on communal polarization . This destructive mindset is bound to lead India and Pakistan to anarchy , political cataclysm , violence and subsequently to paranoia and trust-crisis. India and Pakistan , as responsible democracies with nuclear potential , cannot afford any sort of brinkmanship or oneupmanship in the peace process the two countries are engaged in. The leaders of the two countries are , therefore , supposed to exhibit prudence , political acumen ,stoicism. Present situation demands restraint and sole-searching based on ideal sentiment of altruism. Polemics, recrimination and passing the buck on others is no answer to the present volatile situation created by hawks and ultras who, in fact , profess no ideology except the resolve to lead this globe to total commotion, confusion, uncertainty and pandemonium. We, the pacifists of Kashmir , find an opportunity to make the leaders of India and Pakistan realize that further procrastination and temporization on Kashmir front will conviently add fuel to the fire. Kashmir battle will be fought in the nook and corner of Indo-Pak subcontinent . So an early peaceful and honourable settlement of Kashmir issue based on Kashmiris` inalienable right to self-determination will certainly help in retrieving the two countries from the vortex of violence. It will certainly disarm the ultras from Srinagar to Waziristan . Hence no ammunition will be available for them which they are banking on. As a practicable and pragmatic solution of Kashmir issue we hereby suggest , with emphasis , that India and Pakistan should withdraw their forces from Kashmir and allow the reunification of the two parts which are separated by LOC( Berlin wall as we call it). Installation of a single resistance parliament headed by a prime minister , an ideal Kashmiri patriot having subjective and yet accommodative approach to politics , is what the freedom loving people of Kashmir are craving for. It is a solution that will provide face-saving to both the countries ;it will further neutralize all the trends of enhanced ultraism from Kashmir to Karachi and Mumbai to Assam. Sagacity, prudence and benevolence should be given a chance to prevail to de-escalate the tension and re-generate hope and optimism-the prerequisite for those who matter in the higher echelons of Power in India and Pakistan ::::Wish you success.:::::: Muhammad Azam Inquilabi ::::: ` Patron ::::: Jammu Kashmir Mahaz-e-Azadi(MeA)

(Policy statement issued on June 17, 1947)

“…… The second question that is engaging the attention of the Muslims of Kashmir is whether Kashmir is going to join the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, I have already made it clear more than once that the Indian states are free to join either the Pakaistan Constituent Assembly or the Hindustan Constituent Assembly or to remain independent………..”

(Press statement July 11, 1947)

“…….. The legal position is that with the lapse of paramountcy on the transfer of power by the British, all Indian states would automatically regain their full sovereignty and independent status. They are, therefore free to join either of the two Dominions or to remain independent…….”

(Press statement July 30, 1947)

Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru (The first Prime Minister of Free India)

“Kashmir has been wrongly looked upon as a price for India or Pakistan. People seem to forget that Kashmir is not a commodity for sale or to be bartered. It has an individual existence and its people must be the final arbiters of their future. …….”

(Speech in All India Congress Committee on July 9, 1951)

Chief of Indian UN Delegation Gopala Swami Ayengar

“…… whether she (Kashmir) should withdraw from her accession to India and either acceded to Pakistan or remain independent with a right to claim admission as a member of the United Nations …… all this we have recognized to be a matter for unfettered decision by the people of Kashmir. …….”

(Declaration at the Security Council Jan. 15, 1948)

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, former President of Pakistan

“…. History has shown us that no right of self-determination can be achieved by proxy ….. if the people of Jammu Kashmir want their independence, if they want to be liberated ……, if they want to be free people in fraternity and friendship and comradeship with Pakistan, they will have to give the lead and we will be with them.…… no matter what the consequences.”

(Speech in the National Assembly, July 14, 1972

Mohammad Nawaz Sharif (Former Prime Minister of Pakistan)

“….. I made it very clear that, of course, the right of self-determination means that let the Kashmiris decide as to what they want. This right of self-determination if exercised by the Kashmiris, of course, they have every right to decide whether they want to join Pakistan, they want to be independent or they want to join India …..”

Background of Kashmir Issue

Background of Kashmir Issue

From 1846 to 1847, Kashmir was one and the largest of over 500 semi-independent princely states of what was then called the Indian Sub-Continent. These princely states which were under overall British suzerainty covered only a fraction of the Land and the population of the Sub-Continent. The rest, called British India, was under direct rule of the British.
Towards the end of the first quarter of the present century, both the main political parties of the sub-continent, Indian National Congress and All India Muslim league had accelerated the struggle for freedom of the subcontinent. The Second World War further strengthened their movement and the British had to pledge them freedom after the war. The war ended in 1945 and by the end of 1946 it was clear that British Indian would be divided into two independent states. One confirmed by the declaration made by the British government on June 3, 1947 and on August 14 and 15, 1947 respectively came into existence two independent states of Pakistan and India, Pakistan comprising of the Muslim majority and India of non-Muslim majority areas of British India.
Although the ruler of Kashmir was Hindu but 77 % of its population was Muslim. Moreover the State was geographically far more contiguous with and economically far more dependent on Pakistan than on India hence Kashmir had, in principle, to choose only between complete independence and joining Pakistan. There was no justification whatsoever for Kashmir becoming part of India. Since the ruler was Hindu, he would not like to make his State part of Muslim Pakistan where his own position would be unsafe. So he was seriously thinking of declaring full independence for the State. His Prime Minister, Pundit Ram Chand Kak, the first local Prime Minister from a well known Hindu family, fully supported him in his plans. But the Indian leaders had different and nefarious intentions. They wanted to grab Kashmir by hook or by crook and started adopting most unfair and conspiratory means to achieve their e nd. They got the Prime Minister of the State dismissed only four days before the expected declaration of independence. Some very shortsighted Kashmiri leaders especially Late Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad were also instrumental in removal of Premier Kak who was replaced firstly by a staunch pro-Indian general and subsequently by Justice M. C. Mahajin. Mahajin, as a member of the Boundary Commission had earlier got, most dishonestly and with the help of its chief Red-Cliff, a large area of the Punjab with Muslim majority (which should have gone to Pakistan) included into Indian territory to create a road-link between Kashmir and India. When these activities of their own ruler and Indian leaders came to the knowledge of Kashmiri Muslims especially of the militant tribes of what is now called Azad Kashmir, they rose in revolt against the ruler. In the mean time armed tribesman from Pakistan’s tribal areas also entered Kashmir. The ruler left his summer capital (Srinagar) and fled to Jammu, the winter capital. Pakistani tribesmen were knocking at the very door of Srinagar when the ruler made a request to India for military help which India preconditioned with Kashmir formally joining Indian which the ruler had to do under duress. But before his instrument of accession reached Indian capital, Indian leaders had already dispatched their armed forces to Kashmir by air which captured Srinagar airport just before it was to fall to Pakistani tribesmen. The first Indian contingent advancing towards areas under occupation of the tribesmen was routed but Indians started having an upper hand over tribesmen once they settled down. After some time Pakistan sent its regular armed forces to Kashmir to check fast advance of Indian force. Most of the tribesmen had got involved in loot and plunder hence lost the sympathies and support of the local population.
In the meantime India took the issue to the United Nations whose Security Council, after hearing the representatives of Indian and Pakistan, appointed a commission, the UN Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) to deal with and settle the issue. The Commission after detailed negotiations with the governments of India and Pakistan, adopted two resolutions (of Aug. 13, 1948 and Jan. 5, 1949) which were agreed to and signed by representatives of both the countries. These resolutions provided for cease-fire in Kashmir and its demiliterisation followed by a plebiscite in the whole of Kashmir under UN supervision to determine the future of the State. Cease-fire came into effect on the first of Jan. 1949 but demiliterisation could not be brought about mainly due to wrong interpretations of the UNCIP resolutions by India. A number of UN representatives, sent one after the other, also failed to persuade India to see reasons. Pakistan also committed some follies. After 1957 Indian, started flatly refusing to implement UNCIP resolutions claiming that Kashmir was her integral and constitutional part.
India got two UN Security Council resolutions reiterating Kashmiri’s right of self-determination vetoed by the former Soviet Union in 1957 and 1962. Indo-Pak talks held in 1963-64 under US, UK auspices also failed to bear any fruit mainly due to unfair intransigent attitude specially that of India. Again in 1965 India and Pakistan waged a war which followed the armed people from Azad Kashmir and Pakistan entering Indian occupied Kashmir, could not also solve the issue. The Simla Agreement of 1972 between Indian and Pakistan which provided for ‘final settlement’ of the problem concerning the future of Jammu Kashmir State also failed to bear any fruitful results. And though the Kashmir issue went into cold storage after Indo-Pak War in 1971, Kashmiri people rose themselves into revolt in 1988 and started armed struggle to liberate their motherland to make it an independent and sovereign State with a democratic, federal and non-communal State-Craft. For the last two decades Kashmiris are facing unabated human rights violations at the hands of Indian armed forces. Nevertheless the armed struggle and the unparallel sacrifices by Kashmiri for the last over 20 years have pushed Kashmiris to the front row from oblivion, as the most important party to the issue which can no more be ignored.

Azam Inqilabi PATRON Mahaz-e-Azadi

Azam Inqilabi PATRON Mahaz-e-Azadi

Azam Inqilabi was Born in 1947 in Srinagar, Azam Inqilabi, formally joined the resistance movement of captive Kashmir in 1964. He was arrested first in 1965 at the age of 18. Thereafter he was arrested fifteen times and had to languish in jails and torture centres for about seven years intermittently. After completing graduation in 1968 he crossed the cease-fire-line in March 1969 to meet his ideological guide Maqbool Butt (martyr) at Muzaffarabad. During the past forty years he crossed the LoC eight times while dodging thousands and lakhs of security forces guarding the LoC. He has visited Britain, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey and Nepal to further the cause he is wedded to.
After working in half a dozen resistance organizations he finally joined Mahaz-e-Azadi, the pro-independence organization in 1983. Mahaz was founded on 7th of May, 1977 by elderly Kashmiri leader Sofi Mohd. Akbar who had already worked in the late Plebiscite Front for 22 years as vocal senior stalwart.

He has written several books and booklets in Urdu and English. He has also been the editor of his Urdu journal “Wahdat”. He was the first Chief of the United Jihad Council at Muzaffarabad in 1990-91. After his repatriation from Pakistan in Jan 1995, he played an important role in the revival of resistance political institutions in the State.

Sofi Mohammad Akbar (1889-1987) Founder Mahaz-e-Azadi

Sofi Mohammad Akbar (1889-1987) Founder Mahaz-e-Azadi
Sofi Mohammad Akbar was born in Sopore in 1889. His father died in his early age and hence was brought up by his elder brother Kh. Mohamamd Abdullah Sofi. He completed his basic studies in his native High School and for obvious reasons could not continue his higher studies.:::
Sofi Mohammad Akbar:::
For a short time he also worked as a school teacher but his urge for literature made him to seek knowledge by all means through books of religion and politics which gave him a wide range of understanding of socio-cultural and political matters of Kashmir. In 1931, when Kashmir political resistance against the autocratic rules started boiling, Sofi Mohammad Akbar joined the fray with the cadres of Reading Room Party and as a result of his activities he was arrested and jailed for five months in addition of fine. Again in 1934 he was arrested and fined in addition of spending six months in jail.

He did not stop to organize and mobiles the new generation to launch a concerted movement against the autocratic ruler. In 1938 he was re-arrested and was sent to Muzaffarabad Jail where he spent fourteen months. When in 1939, Muslim Conference was changed into National Conference, Sofi Akbar opposed that decision and resigned in protest but his resignation was not accepted but persuaded to support. In 1946, when “Quit Kashmir Movement” took its start, he spent eighteen months in jail. In 1953 when Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was dethroned and arrested, he along-with other played a central role in organizing J&K Plebiscite Front and launched a concerted movement in Kashmir, known as Rai-Shumari (plebiscite – right of self-determination movement).

In 1971 when he went to Mecca to observe HAJ, he prayed for nothing but independence of Kashmir. He stayed in Mecca for about four and a half month. Sofi Akbar was a pivotal force in all the pro-freedom activities of Plebiscite Front launched from the headquarters of ‘Mujahid Manzil’, Srinagar. He served in the Front till 1975 When Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah entered into the infamous agreement known as “Indra-Abdullah Accord” and was installed as Chief Minister of J&K. When Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah dissolved J&K Plebiscite Front in 1975, Sofi Mohammad Akbar didn’t accept that self-centered decision of S. M. Abdullah and to his utter distress and disappointment from Sheikh Abdullah rolled his bed from the ‘Mujahid Manzil’ and went to his native home – Sopore in district Baramulla. In 1977, after re-organising his determination and commitment with the sacred Kashmir cause, he formed J&K Mahaz-e-Azadi on May 7, 1977 with the object of complete independence of the State. This created a new ray of hope for new young generation to continue their cherished struggle for independence. Many young stalwarts of the freedom struggle joined him and the otherwise diluted struggle for complete independence took a new direction. In his life long struggle he spent a modest way of life. In 1984 his health could not support him to continue his political activities and remained holed up in his home for three years. And at the age of 98 he breathed his last on Dec. 14, 1987. May God bless his soul.

Constitution of Mahaz-e-Azadi

Constitution of Mahaz-e-Azadi
The non –violence, national unity and constant Struggle of Kashmir are the key words to success mod`eratism which is the suitable strategy to achieve the cherished goal of freedom with Independence of Kashmir.
1953 provided us the golden chance to introspect and to get rid of the shortcomings vis-à-vis our political strategy whole nation was engaged to sacrament itself for the sins- the young exterminated- innocent people caned for demanding the rights and freedom fighters put behind the bars. The immolating examples of personal and financial sacrifices were set. The freedom movement was passing through the phase of evolution .The fall of Dhaka in 1971 caused the wide spread shadiness in the rank and file of Kashmiri leadership the lost faith in: The dedication towards the freedom struggle . The obscurity and disinterestedness prevailed over the leaders of freedom struggle which paved the way for the collapse of the freedom front the Plebiscite Front in 1975 .The disarray of dedication and perseverance gave momentum to new people . The rout of some-cemented the way for greatness of the other people. The zealous and serious workers accepted the challenges of new political situation. The icon of perseverance dedication Sufi Muhammad Akbar in coordination with young political workers: Who shared common political ideology on 7th of May 1977 announced the formation of the Jammu Kashmir Mahaz-e-Azadi. The announcement shook the very foundation of evil occupation. The struggle began anew and in order to make their presence felt the friends associated with the Mahaz-e-Azadi- began to act.
The objective of the Mahaz-e-Azadi is the creation of the righteous welfare state the goal can be achieved by following mentioned regulations :
a) The Revival of conscience: - The Mahaz-e- Azadi wants to create the movement of revival of consciousness in the nation. We wish to revive the conscious youth in the suppressed and downtrodden nation to cultivate in them the ability to differentiate between the virtue and vice .The initiation of consciousness is possible by the consecrated ideas and acts .The alliance to absolute truth and allowing self introspection keeps the consciousness active and the breathing consciousness keeps the sentiment of sacrifice just alive .
b) We want to fight for realistic economic and political liberation of Kashmir: Our fight is against every kind of enslavement whether it is economic, spiritual, political or other types of subjugation . The complete independence of Kashmir is the prime aim of our life. Our struggle is for the liberation of Kashmir from the shackles of slavery of the powerful nation or nations. We declare that the Kashmir is the dispute and demands the solution- India and Pakistan on different occasions and in different institutions have accepted the RIGHT TO RIGHT OF SELF DETERMINATION for Kashmiri nation .We stipulate that both the countries must allow Kashmiri people as a nation to Solve the Kashmir issue according to their own desires as a prime party to the issue. We sense that Kashmir problem has resulted in the animosity between India and Pakistan -the war is no solution at all. The Kashmir issue is neither a regional conflict nor a border dispute; it is issue in which the human lives and their rights are deeply involved. The issue is about the responsive and plucky people-who believe in non-violence, adroitness and by reciprocated deliverance along with all the parties to the row: Without encompassing the basic question of the dispute. We believe that by discounting the Kashmiris as the party to the issue and coming terms according the internal and external strategic needs of New Delhi and Islamabad will vacillate the issue which will lead to perilous conclusions.
The modus operandi of Jammu and Kashmir Mahaz-e- Azadi is to work on the following guidelines to assimilate the objectives which we can do keeping in view our financial constraints.

1. We want to encourage the brotherhood, love and unity instead of Prejudice, squabble and malice towards one another.

2. We will end the engagements of exploitation and encourage the appointments backed by vision, logic and reasoning derived from the unending source of knowledge.

3. We want to soak up in our Youth to adore the objectives and offer the premeditated sacrifices for the accomplishment of the objectives and seek nothing but only the God’s consecration.

4. The Mahaz-e-Azadi will team up with the contemporary organisations and political parties which are ideologically and politically analogous to our political objectives vis-à-vis Kashmir issue. All the like minded parties are our associates and we want to promote friendship amongst all the fellow political appointments which are connected with or involved in the freedom movement. The political difference, dissents and baulks within the frame work of objectives of freedom will no way fetter the feelings of brotherhood and trust towards one another to create the sagacity of benevolence towards each other is our obligation which will generate mutual trust. The trust is the essence of harmony and the first stage of agreement and concord.

Jammu Kashmir Mahaz-e-Azadi since its commencement believed in the non -violence, temperance, national consensus and unvarying but meaningful struggle to achieve our goal. We resolve to maintain our devotion to communal harmonization which is an indispensable component of our belief. We kept our word and pictured our commitment when whole of the Sub –continent was alight in communal violence. Jammu Kashmir Mahaz-e-Azadi is struggling for cultural identity and the complete Freedom of Jammu Kashmir-for which various contemporary organisations also fight for same objective. Shaheed Muhammad Maqbool Butt was breathing illustration of Kashmir’s individuality and freedom. He made an extreme sacrifice for the freedom and revere of Kashmir and its people. He fulfilled his commitment left unfinished mission up to us now! We have to see what we can do to accomplish the sacrosanct mission. We are not disappointed at Allah’s benediction. The sacrifices of the martyrs the sanctified blood will not go in vain.
The president of Mahaz-e-Azadi has to be elected in the convocation of basic members of the party- one third majority is essential for the President :The president with the help of Senior cadres of Mahaz-e-Azadi will constitute the central consultative council and will select the central and district administrators of the organisation. So the Senior activists have to play administrative role in the organisation. The goals of the organisation will be laid down by the senior administrators and the final consensus in the political economic and financial matters will be made by the democratic vote. However the Patron in his lifetime can nominate and select the acting patron.
